NEW MINISTRY Lend a hand to Helping Hands, the committee that matches your needs with solutions. Just ask MOM: our new Mercy Outreach Movement, or DAD: Doing Astounding Deeds, as we strive to embody the Corporal Works of Mercy here at Newman. If you have a need, or are able to help perform a quick good deed, please leave your name and contact info on the signup sheets on the blue cupboard in the foyer. THANKS a million for helping us restart this very important ministry! NOTE: if you’ve been a parishioner for awhile, you may remember the ‘His Hands and Feet’ ministry, which matched members of the Newman community who needed some short term help (e.g., a ride, spring garden cleanup, mending, sending/reading an email attachment, etc.) with members who could provide that assistance.
LECTURE: On Wednesday, April 23rd at 7pm at Newman, the DSPT presents its Annual Aquinas Lecture: “Christian Life Beyond Virtue: Aquinas on the importance of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit for the Moral and Spiritual Life.” The guest speaker is John R. T. Berkman, a Professor of Moral Theology at Regis College. Wednesday, April 23rd, 7pm at Newman. RSVP here
LECTURE: On Tuesday, May 6 at 7pm, the Jesuit School, Mary Magdalen parish and Newman Hall-Holy Spirit Parish present a panel discussion on JST professor Julie Rubio’s 2024 book, “Can you Be a Catholic and a Feminist?”. Panelists include Fr. Xavier Lavagetto,OP, Pastor at Newman Hall; Sheila Ring, Parishioner at St. Mary Madgalen; Nidia Fuentes, JST Staff member; and Dan Finucane, SJ, student at JST. PROGRAM: Women in Conversation’s May program, “Artistic Expression as an Act of Resilience,” is on Saturday, May 10th starting at 9:30. Women are welcome to come at 9 for coffee and social hour. (Bring something delicious to share.)

Berkeley Catholic Worker (7:30am, Sunday) - Come help Berkeley Catholic Worker serve breakfast to the homeless. Just show up or contact JC for more info. Also help serve dinner to the homeless on holidays at 4pm in the Newman Parking Lot.
Birthday Blessings - on the 2nd Sunday of the month, we honor all in our congregation who were born that month. At the end of select Masses we invite people born that month to come to the altar for a blessing.

Food Not Bombs (all day) - Help Food Not Bombs prepare a vegetarian meal for the people at homeless encampments in Berkeley. For more info, check the volunteer section of their website. For information about this global non-profit, click here
Berkeley Catholic Worker (Holidays and on 5th Sundays ) - Come help Berkeley Catholic Workers serve meals to the needy in our parking lot during holidays, when few other groups are serving meals.
Wednesday
Newman Elders (Parishioners and friends who are >60) Meets for lunch and discussion on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 1 pm in the Gallery. Bring your lunch and something to share.
Catholicism WOW! Gathers online each week on Wednesday from 7-8pm to explore the wonders of Catholicism. Contact Ned & Yvette at niccolls@comcast.net to get the link. This week (Wed. April 16) our topic is This week we will take a look at the life of Activist Sophie Magdalena Scholl. Who was she? Watch this 19 minute video to find out … or simply come to the meeting. Also, we prepare ourselves for Easter and pray that Jesus will fill our hearts for love of God and neighbor.
Exploring Catholicism and OCIA 7pm -8:30pm, Wednesdays upstairs in the multiversity room. Join Fr. Xavier, students, and permanent parishioners to learn about our faith, ways of approaching scripture, and various types of prayer.

Emmaus (7pm, Thur) - This Scripture sharing group discusses the upcoming Sunday readings meets online using ZOOM. Please contact Elizabeth to join the meeting.
Centering Prayer/Lectio Divina (10am, Thur) Spend an hour in contemplative silence and listening for God. Centering prayer is a simple contemplative form of prayer where people empty their minds of thoughts and silently rest in the presence of God. Lectio Divina is a prayer form for listening to the word of God in Scripture. Meet in the Patio Room on the 2nd floor at 10am. (NOTE, no session on Holy Thursday)

Newman Grads: Sunday Social (Sun, 11am) - Graduate students and young adults, meet after Mass in front of the church for casual conversation over coffee or brunch or sports.
Sunday Student Dinner (Sundays after the 5 pm Mass.) Meet some fellow students for dinner after Mass. Meals are prepared by various ministry groups of the parish and students themselves help with clean up. We invite a free will donation of $5-$7 to help defray the costs of the dinner.
