Thanks 2022-2023 FOCUS Missionaries

Thanks to Our 4 FOCUS Missionaries - Moses, Natalie, Danae, and Jordan

They helped to make it another successful year of Campus Ministry. One particular note is the 5 graduating seniors who have decided to devote two years of their lives to serving as a FOCUS Missionary in another college next year. We also have one graduating senior who is dedicating one year to serve the Philadelphia homeless through Christ in the City. Full time service to Christ is a sign that what happened 2000 years ago when disciples changed their life to follow and serve Christ, is not fairy tell but happening today. Christ is alive!

Where are our FOCUS Missionaries now? After over 2 years of service, Moses has returned home to discern where God is calling him next. Natalie, after 2 years with us, has returned to Colorado to be an engineer. Danae has returned home and will be applying to medical schools. Jordan will be returning back to us next year after another summer of training and fund raising.

Bishop's Ministries Appeal 2023

BIshop’s Ministries Appeal 2023

Congratulations Newman, we raised enough funds with the matching fund to fulfill our goal this year for the Bishop’s Ministries Appeal. Thank you for your generosity. Any donation you now give to the appeal will be redirected to the parish.

If you still would like to donate, please specify your parish - Holy Spirit - Newman Hall.

This year’s theme for the Bishop’s Ministries Appeal is “I am with you always.” We know our Lord is true to His words. Every time we gather in Eucharistic celebration, our Lord comes to us in His Real Presence, His body and blood in the Eucharist. We have also felt his presence in the good people of God we meet and know at our parish. We know Christ is with us through the wonderful ministries we find at our parish, Newman Hall. Also in our service to others like the serving of food for the needy in People’s Park or on our patio the first Saturday of the month, we encounter our almighty, yet humble Lord in his poverty and hunger.

The challenge is do others know our Lord is true to His Word? Are others in the East Bay sensing that Jesus is with them always?. Are they able to develop a friendship with Jesus?

This is where supporting our diocese is so important and invaluable. We are in our cozy part of Berkeley, that we often miss our brothers and sisters in the more challenging or isolating parts of the East Bay, such as those houseless , those children with inadequate schools or supplies, those single parents struggling in the suburbs alone, those without documentation trying to survive, those without good role models or jobs with dignity and a living wage, those without direction and faith, etc. Our diocese has parishes and schools everywhere. There is no part of the East Bay that is not under some parish’s care.

To support our parishes with qualified priests and staff, to provide resources to help parishes grow in faith and then live that rich faith outwardly in their community so everyone can experience our Lord, we rely on our diocese for resources and support. More importantly we need to redistribute the funds so parishes in comfortable areas can help parish ministries in needy areas, so everyone rises and flourishes together. Economic disparity in our great nation is one of the great sins of our time - causing desperation, despair, fear, crime, polarization, abortion, selfishness, and the diminishment of love.

The Bishop's Ministries Appeal supports the ministries that go out into the parishes:  faith formation and evangelization, CYO sports, formation of priests to serve parishioners, care of the retired priests, and meeting the unexpected needs of schools and parishes. We invite you to learn more below about how your support makes a difference, and donate in a way that works for you – be it a recurring gift, a one-time gift, or a pledge.

2023 Paulist Appeal

Annual Paulist Appeal

Our Annual Paulist Appeal allows benefactors to support the mission of the Paulist Fathers. We are an American men’s religious order, founded by Servant of God Isaac Hecker to evangelize the United States. Our founder, in the mid-1800’s, felt the spirit of America was ripe for tapping into the excellence and energy of the Catholic faith.

Today with the rise of folks having no religious affiliation, with most of them coming from folks who have abandoned their religious upbringing, now is a great need to bring the Good News to our great nation. With the rise in apathy, polarization, depression, fear, and stuck at the bottom feeling, we need the liberating power and joyful inspiration of the Good News of Jesus Christ. From our beginning the Paulists have been forging new ways from maintenance to mission. Our founder was fearful, even from the beginning, that if we took on too many parishes that we would forget our missionary calling and zeal.

Support the Paulist Appeal

Your financial support helps us support our missionary efforts like Busted Halo and reconciliation, educate our seminarians like Eric and Chris, and take care of our senior Paulists like Fr. Ken and Fr. Steve.

Thanks to Fr. Michael McGarry, CSP, who preached our annual Paulist Appeal this year. Fr. Michael was pastor at Newman from 1993 to 1999. He is currently on sabbatical and based in Boston, MA.

24 Hours for the Lord

1pm, Friday, Feb 24 to 12pm, Saturday, Feb 25
Hecker Room

Come spend some time in prayer with our Lord these next few hours as we have 24 hour adoration at Newman and around the diocese. Prayer is such an essential part of our spiritual life, as we connect with our Lord, drawing blessing upon blessing. When we slow down and open ourselves up to our Lord, He cannot be want to shower His love upon us.

If you have never spent time in adoration, don’t worry. It’s about entering an ocean of peace. We have some guide sheets and meditation material to assist you.

We also will offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation at 1pm, Friday, and at 11am, Saturday. Our 24 Hours will conclude with Benediction at Noon and will then process to the chapel for our 12:10pm Mass.

National Marriage Week (Feb 7-14)

The observances of National Marriage Week (Feb. 7-14) and World Marriage Day (Sunday, Feb. 12) are an opportunity to focus on building a culture of life and love that begins with supporting and promoting marriage and the family. This year's theme, "Marriage...one flesh, given and received" highlights the one-flesh union of husband and wife that is willed by God. It also indicates the personal self-gift of each spouse, one to the other. These concepts point to Christ who gives Himself under the appearance of bread and wine—as real flesh and blood.

As a Couple, consider:

  • Prayerfully reread your wedding vows to each other. Take a moment to recommit yourself to the vow you made on your wedding day.

  • Have a date night in - get dressed for dinner. Order takeout from a place you’ve gone to for Valentine’s day. Get the kids to be waiters and servers.

  • Frame a copy of your wedding invitation or program if you still have it.

  • Recall friends and family who were part of your wedding day. Who needs prayers? Who can you reach out to?

  • Pray a Lectio Divina together over your readings from your wedding.

As a Family, consider:

  • Look through your wedding album or watch your wedding video. Share stores form your wedding day with your children.

  • Make a family timeline beginning with when you met or your wedding day up to the present. Add anything that has impacted the life of the family (e.g., pregnancies, moves, vacations, new jobs, pets, etc.)

  • Get out your crafting supplies and make Valentine Cards for everyone in the family. Tell each person something you love about them. Hang up the cards for everyone to see..

As a Child, consider:

  • Making a valentine card for your parents. Call them on Valentine’s Day.

  • Offer to cook dinner (or order out) for your parents and give them a candlelight dinner.

  • Ask your parents how they met, dated, proposed, and knew to say yes. Ask what dreams they had, which ones have been fulfilled and how you can help them fulfill the unfulfilled dreams.

  • Pray a rosary for your parents, asking Mary and Joseph’s intercession.

  • Create a playlist of the tops songs of the year when they were married and have a family dance party.
