Newman Hall-Holy Spirit Parish has been alive and busy in spite of the lockdown which started March 17.
We immediately started streaming our Masses and we kept as many programs and groups going. Emmaus, Catholicism WOW, Newman Elders, Tuesday Theology, Women in Conversation, Loaves & Fishes, and Berkeley Catholic Worker still continue to meet and minister. Many are meeting through ZOOM. Other noted event since the beginning of the lockdown include:
SMT Service Committee: November Fundraising for Berkeley Food & Housing Project - During the month of November up to Thanksgiving, Newman will be collecting non-perishable foods and other times to support the Berkeley Food and Housing Project. Collection barrels will be accessible before and after Mass times. We collected around $800 of food and supplies.
Paulist Prayer Service on the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows for the Victims of COVID-19 - Join the Paulist Fathers as we have a social online prayer service to remember all those who have died from COVID-19.
CACCLC 2020 (California Chinese Catholic Living Camp) “Peace Be With You” - Chinese Catholic young adult and other young adults are invited to a virtual camp/retreat weekend over Labor Day Weekend, Sep 4-6. It will be a time to explore cultivating peace with God, ourselves, and others using ZOOM. Sign up byJuly 31 to guarantee your t-shirt size or by Aug 15 at the latest.
Br. Xavier Marie (Ting) Wu’s First Profession (10:30am, Sat (9/5)) - Alumni Ting ‘19 will be making his First Profession to the The Dominican Friars of the Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus with two other novices (Michael Thomas Cain and Kevin Peter Cantu). Due to quarantine, we cannot attend in person, but can join virtually HERE.
Paulist Diaconate Ordinations (Sept 5) - Michael Cruickshank and Richard Whitney were ordained transitional deacons during a special Mass in the Crypt Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C..
Paulist Professions (Sept 4) - Michael Cruickshank and Richard Whitney made their final promises; Christopher Lawton and Danilo Macalinao renewed their promises; and Christopher Malano, Benjamin Chisholm and Noah Ismael made their first promises. Eric Hernandez had already renewed his Profession with us on Tue, Sept 1st.
Season of Creation - From Sept 1 to Oct 5, we will be celebrating the Season of Creation each year to live the values of Laudato Si’, to care for creation.
Paolo Pucini, CSP Ordination (July 25) - Fr. Paolo was ordained at St. Austin in Austin, TX. He is our only Paulist ordination this year.
Justin Claravall, SJ Ordination (5pm, July 15) - Fr. Justin did his pastoral assignment as a deacon with us this past year.
Congratulations to Kara Speltz, winner of the Fr. Bill O’Donnell Social Justice Committee Award - During my time her leadership on our Fr. Bill O’Donnell-Non-Violent Peacemaking Group has been stellar, reaching out to more constituents (e.g., students, Muslims, etc.) and addressing a variety of social justice issues (e.g., Muslim-Catholic dialogue, racism, Dorothy Day, education, Jubilee Parish, Native American heritage rights in Berkeley, …).
MASK Delivery Ministry - Kara Speltz organized Newman seamstresses to make masks which were then distributed to those in need, especially the homeless.
DAD-ication - Father’s Day Tribute (June 21) - Honoring the Newman fathers.
