One of the more challenging circumstances in life is isolation, having few social connections, feeling abandoned and alone. Due to injury, illness, or advancing age and loss of mobility, some of our parishioners are not able to come to Newman and join our community on Sundays. Whether theirs is a temporary or permanent state, homebound parishioners are members of our community and we have a Christian duty to be there for them. From the earliest days of the church, Communion was set aside for ministers to take to the homebound. This used to occur as part of the Mass dismissal. Later a tabernacle was established to store consecrated Hosts so homebound could receive communion throughout the week. What can be more wonderful than to bring Christ to another, to allow the homebound to feel connected to Christ and the Church!
