“God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission. I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good; I shall do His work.”

Weekly Update-February 19, 2012
Mark your calendar now for these upcoming events:
“Sex in 3-D!” Join us at Newman with Lisa Fullam, PhD from the Jesuit school of theology, as she helps us explore a healthy Catholic sexuality. Over three sessions she’ll develop the themes of Incarnation, Intimacy, and Insight. These three goals are related to the joy of being embodied spirits, the hope of mutuality in our relationships, and the faith that we will discover the truth about ourselves. The two remaining sessions are 7:30-9pm Thursday February 23rd and March 8th. Click here to see event flyer.
Eucharistic Minister Training. Ministers of Holy Communion are needed at all masses. If you have thought about becoming a minister of Holy Communion but have not pursued the idea, NOW IS THE TIME! Individuals who have completed the training regularly comment that they began the training with some hesitation, but finished with enthusiasm and confidence. Ministers are not assigned masses in advance, but instead serve at the mass they attend. Parishioners interested in becoming a minister of Holy Communion are invited to participate in a four-session training program. Sessions are scheduled for the Mondays of Feb 27, March 5, 12, and 19 from 7:00–8:30 p.m. Participants must attend all four sessions to be commissioned. If you are interested, please ask for and complete an application available at the front desk or on the hospitality table. You may direct questions to Gary Addiego at gandjaddiego@sbcglobal.net.
Father Al will offer an evening church tour on Monday, February 27 at 7:30 p.m. It will feature pictures of the old Newman Hall, construction of the present building, and insights into the chapel and the sanctuary furniture. Father Al will share stories from the architect -Mario Ciamipi – and sculptor, Stephen DeStabler.
Will Our Faith Have Children? In the last 30 years, the Roman Catholic Church has lost almost 60% of its members, especially among the younger cohorts…those 18-45! An amazing number, somewhat dampened by recent immigration from Latin America and Asia! On March 1st, George Greiner, SJ, Newman parishioner and Professor at the Jesuit School of Theology, will present three essentials of our Catholic Tradition that need to be handed on to younger generations. Participants will then be invited to discuss George’s proposal. The conversation will continue on March 15th when Jean Molesky-Poz, Newman parishioner and Theology Lecturer at Santa Clara University, will present on “Recovering Spiritual Traditions.” Jean will treat some of the practices of Catholicism that need to be passed on and invite us to continue dialoguing on the matter. Both presentations and the conversations that will follow will surely enrich us!
DVD Viewings. Dan Cawthon, retired professor of Theology and Literature from St. Mary’s and Newman parishioner for many years, will lead a 4 evening viewing of 2 DVDs on Wednesdays March 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th. The first two weeks will present Boston College theologian Michael Himes’ reflection on the Lenten Sundays’ Scripture readings, e.g., “Woman at the Well,” “Man Born Blind,” and “Lazarus.” The second DVD presents Robert Barron, Catholic Theologian from Chicago, on “The Seven Deadly Vices” and “The Seven Lively Virtues”.

HELP WANTED: Willing hands and feet for a place of ministry in the body of Christ for a weekend that will inspire and bless. Corazon is a non-profit volunteer organization that has built homes, community, and sponsored education for 30 years in impoverished neighborhoods of Northern Mexico. On April 27-29th high school, college, and adult parishioners from St. Augustine and Newman Holy Spirit will travel from Berkeley to Chula Vista, CA. On April 28th the group will caravan to a jobsite in Tijuana and build a home in one day for a family in need, returning to Chula Vista tired and sweaty in the late afternoon. On April 29th we have a morning Eucharist service at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, reflecting on the weekend, before heading back to a delicious homecoming meal at St. Augustine parish.
